lately

July has always been my favorite month of the year. Probably because its my birthday month but also warm sun and fresh fruit! I am enjoying the few warm days that Berkeley has and savoring them. We hardly ever say, “Wow its so hot today.” I so wish that there was a beach closer to home so I could go flop down in the sand tomorrow (and I could get comfortable in this sand, since I am seven months pregnant) and bathe in the sunlight.

Loving lots and lots of fresh fruit! Mangos, apricots, pluots, plums, peaches, blueberries, cantaloupe and bananas mostly. Pesky plastic packaging keeps me from buying lots of strawberries and such. Love cherries too when I remember to bring a bag. maiki brings pyrex containers to the market to fill with blueberries. He is so smart.

Found cute red shoes that just scream summer. They may or may not be comfortable but affordable enough to take the risk.

Visiting friends in Santa Cruz next weekend. I love that place! No Boardwalk for me this time. I just want to eat a caramel apple from the pier and walk along listening to the sea lions with my love. Just walking along Pacific makes me happy.

Receiving packages almost daily to the cottage. Jason gave us a gift certificate to Amazon and the things that I picked out for baby came in three shipments. I also got a maternity/nursing/boppy like pillow, an Uppercase magazine (!), Sakura Bloom sling, and soon to be arriving, striped towels. Yay for fun mail!

Sakura Bloom & Marvelous Kiddo Giveaway

Today I won a giveaway from the blog Marvelous Kiddo. It was part of their Sakura Bloom Styleathon and they generously gave three lucky winners a linen sling from Sakura Bloom’s Pure Collection. maiki and I get to chose the color and it is a tough decision! We are leaning towards seaglass.

We are both really looking forward to babywearing and these slings look both beautifully made and easy to put on. From the beginning maiki and I have discussed not even getting a stroller and have remained confident that babywearing really is the best way is to hold baby Emma. Since we primarily walk everywhere I am sure that the sling will be well used!

I have really enjoyed discovering the blog Marvelous Kiddo and have read dozens (if not hundred+) birth stories from Leigh’s site! I was a bit obsessed in the beginning and feel that I now have a better understanding of the actual birth part that is to come. She also posts lots of classical art pieces that depict breast feeding women and shares openly how wonderful it is to be a breast feeding mother. I felt a connection when reading her blog and the stories of so many different women. I am so grateful to her site and now also for being a winner of her giveaway. The internets are full of inspiration and supportive folks!

Thank you Leigh of Marvelous Kiddo and Lynne Banach of Sakura Bloom for the linen sling!

holiday road trip

For this year end holiday we rented a car for a week. Our plan was to drive down to Southern California to visit folks there. The first stop was taking Jason to his home in Isla Vista. On the way we stopped at Kinokuniya and the Clover Cake Shop for food, manga and a new calendar. We listened to This American Life the whole way and time seemed to fly by. This part of the trip covered Berkeley to Santa Barbara. Jason showed me his campus and we took lots of pictures of the aquatic birds. My favorite spot are the stairs that go into the ocean, just a few blocks from his apartment.

Christmas Eve we drove to El Segundo where my family was having a big party. We crashed it and everyone was very surprised. My Dad cried and I got lots of hugs from everyone. It was a traditional kind of Christmas celebration with Santa Clause making an appearance and a white elephant gift exchange for the adults. I walked away with some pot holders which I really needed. It was fun but overwhelming and we said farewell and drove to Oceanside that evening.

The next day was like any other. We went to IHOP and visited with friends and family. I practiced calligraphy, held a baby and beat everyone at poker. Much more relaxing than the previous evening. The following day we drove further to visit with more people and basically stayed up all night just talking and enjoying each others company. Also I got to hold a bunny, like a lot! I really want a bunny rabbit now. Before driving home, we decided that we should probably sleep and rented a hotel room for the evening.

Driving home took forever but we didn’t care—we just wanted to go home! We needed real food, clean water and to get the hell away from the land of styrofoam and Wallmart. We stopped in at my parents house to say hello/goodbye one last time and to Fry’s to buy some anime and then drove all night. Waking up at home the next day was blissful. Traveling is great and all but nothing beats home. The first thing I did was go to the Monterey Market and buy lots of fruit and vegetables!

After being home for a day we went driving to find snow. Took the 80 as far as we could drive before being told that we needed chains to continue. I was in snow (where it was snowing) for the first time since being a small child. It was so much fun and I was elated! I loved just walking into the deep snow, trying to catch snowflakes and taking pictures of everything! It was beautiful. And very cold. I am a little bit glad that I don’t have to worry about snow in Berkeley. I am thankful that I don’t have a car but can rent one and drive two hours to a magical snowy place.

Took the car back today and I am not missing it. Having a car is not necessary for us and we very much enjoy walking or riding bicycles around town. I cannot wait to take BART to SF and hang out during the last days of my vacation from work. I am fortunate to live in such a wonderful place!

weekend in photos

This was a fabulous weekend for me. Saturday we went to the Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco. I cannot wait to post our crazy fun/silly pictures from the Magnolia Photo Booth. I bought a zip up hoodie from R&L/chickabird and some small fun items.

Sunday I went to Castle in the Air and picked up some new colorful inks for calligraphy practice. I bought an alphabet from Linea Carta at the fair and was all ready to jump back into my calligraphy practice. I wrote up a bunch of thank you notes at Local 123 and sipped a delicious mocha. The rain did not keep me from enjoying every second of my weekend. ^_^
