learning about the mail

For Valentine’s Day we made some cards and sent them to Emma’s aunts, uncles and cousins that live in Los Angeles. I cut out animals from a roll of cute wrapping paper that I picked up at the reuse center and Emma pasted the animals on folded paper. We took a field trip to Paper Source and bought some red envelopes and came home to stamp (rubber stamp and postage stamp/sticker) and address them. The next day I thought it would be fun to walk downtown to the post office. The downtown Oakland post office is in a gorgeous old building and there was no line when we got there so bought some more postage stamps. We talked about all the p.o. boxes that we saw and dropped our valentine cards in a mail slot.

Since then I have actually had to mail a few other things and Emma has been super interested in the stamps, the writing on envelopes and such so today we made a mailbox. I used a shoe box and cut out a hole. She can lift the lid to take things out and then stick them back in again. I already had a whole bunch of little envelopes and cards for her to play with so we were good to go without any prep work involved. It was a fun activity to reinforce what she knows and include some pretend play. This could definitely be an activity that includes writing so we may incorporate that more next time. ^_^

lately

July has always been my favorite month of the year. Probably because its my birthday month but also warm sun and fresh fruit! I am enjoying the few warm days that Berkeley has and savoring them. We hardly ever say, “Wow its so hot today.” I so wish that there was a beach closer to home so I could go flop down in the sand tomorrow (and I could get comfortable in this sand, since I am seven months pregnant) and bathe in the sunlight.

Loving lots and lots of fresh fruit! Mangos, apricots, pluots, plums, peaches, blueberries, cantaloupe and bananas mostly. Pesky plastic packaging keeps me from buying lots of strawberries and such. Love cherries too when I remember to bring a bag. maiki brings pyrex containers to the market to fill with blueberries. He is so smart.

Found cute red shoes that just scream summer. They may or may not be comfortable but affordable enough to take the risk.

Visiting friends in Santa Cruz next weekend. I love that place! No Boardwalk for me this time. I just want to eat a caramel apple from the pier and walk along listening to the sea lions with my love. Just walking along Pacific makes me happy.

Receiving packages almost daily to the cottage. Jason gave us a gift certificate to Amazon and the things that I picked out for baby came in three shipments. I also got a maternity/nursing/boppy like pillow, an Uppercase magazine (!), Sakura Bloom sling, and soon to be arriving, striped towels. Yay for fun mail!
