thanksgiving post

Having a nice relaxing holiday with four days off in a row. On Thanksgiving I walked with a sleeping Emma to the Aquatic park where I saw ducks, egrets and a pelican. At home we ate stuffing, cheese and pumpkin soup. Drank wine and ate chocolate covered pretzles. Watched Kung Fu Panda (one of my favorite movies!) and Objectified. It was our kind of holiday celebrating.

The next few days have been spent playing at the park, doing laundry, adding to my Pinterest boards, watching Kung Fu Panda 2 , getting a much needed haircut, road tripping to the Mitsuwa Marketplace and eating sweets with lots of tea. Emma Clover is practicing standing, drinking from a cup, feeding herself and playing with her new red matryoshka dolls. Being a mom to a one-year-old doesn’t leave a lot of down time but when I get the chance I like gazing at amazing places like this one and searching for cute shoes I cannot afford the internets. Its a good life.

home day

Its Monday and I am home with Emma. I have a doctor’s appointment this afternoon and took the morning off to hang out. I got up and took a shower before Emma woke up. Then we walked to my work to drop something off. Lots of children and parents at my school got the chance to see her and Emma was full of smiles for them. Afterwards we took a leisurely walk back down San Pablo, stopping for coffee at Caffe Trieste and window shopping all the way home.

sweet saturday

Today I ventured up to College Avenue to go to Tail of the Yak. It was a fun store full of gorgeous paper, textiles and objects. The surprise balls were even more amazing in person. I bought a wood block stamp and metal circles with the letters of Emma’s name.

Also visited Nabolom Bakery, a co-operative bakery that makes yummy things. I am a big fan of morning buns and they did not disappoint. I bought Emma her first toy at a nearby toy store and then met maiki downtown for Froyo.

less waste home

I know that we are on our way to making the cottage waste free but its a lot of work! Must celebrate the small achievements:

*Last weekend we visited the Pasta Shop and bought a pound of provolone sans the extra packaging. They wrapped it in paper for us because we didn’t bring a container but hey its not plastic.

*Planning on hitting up farmers markets but for the time being are enjoying the Monterey Market which offers the same perks of bulk produce with zero packaging.

*Have been filling containers since we’ve lived in Berkeley at the Berkeley Bowl and I rave about their big refill bottles of Giovanni shampoo & conditioner, Kiss My Face soap, and Dr. Bronner magic soap. It feels great to not go through all those plastic bottles.

*Buying more and more bulk foods now from all over Berkeley. Great for nuts, dried fruit, oatmeal, grains, pasta, cereal, teas, and chocolate. Next I want to try filling spice jars, sugar and flour as they run out.

I aim for my kitchen pantry to some day resemble this pantry from a Tasha Tudor illustration.
